We Black women are all too familiar with the taboo of sleeping without our head scarf. To eliminate the friction-caused hair breakage that occurs against cotton pillowcases at night, we must wrap our hair, our full, voluptuous crowns the next day. Whether you are defining your curls or seeking full body movement, a satin or silk pillowcase is the key to nighttime hair care.

However, not all silk or satin pillowcases are created equal and there are certain elements to consider before choosing the best one.

What is Silk?

According to Britannica, silk is an “animal fibre produced by certain insects and arachnids as building material for cocoons and webs, some of which can be used to make fine fabrics.” A fine fabric, indeed.

Silk has less chemicals then those often found in other textiles like cotton, polyester and rayon. As one of the world’s leading prized materials, silk is breathable, comfortable, and one of the softest fabrics to come in contact with your hair or skin.

A Silk Pillowcase will maintain the natural oils in your hair and allow for less friction between your hair and other surfaces such as a cotton sheet or pillowcase.

What is Satin?

To quote our good sis Britannica again, satin is a textile-weave fabric “characterized by a smooth surface and usually a lustrous face and dull back.” In other words, satin combines fabrics — such as nylon, rayon and polyester — to form a glossy side and a dull side.

Which to Choose?

The choice is completely yours. Satin is cheaper than silk, but if your prefer to use natural fibers and get the most impact then silk may be your best option. Each material is known to maintain the natural oils in your hair and allows less friction between your hair and skin against other surfaces. Every day your body produces natural oils that help your hair and skin stay healthy. With most people spending 7-8 hours a night sleeping on a pillowcase, it is important to protect your body's natural oils by not sleeping on fabrics that suck these oils out of your hair like a sponge.

The real tea, and we cannot stress this enough, is to protect your hair and skin at night with one of these materials.
